Author Interview with Katharyn Blair

Hey folks! I got this amazing opportunity to interview Katharyn Blair, the author of Unchosen which hit the stores on January 26,2021.

Thankyou turnthepagetours for having me on the tour of this amazing book!

Hi Katharyn! Hope you are staying safe in these times. How has 2020 been for you?

Is it terrible that 2020 wasn’t the worst year for me, personally? *laughs sadly*. Honestly, I’m privileged enough to be able to hunker down with my husband and kids. My parents live next door, too, so we’ve been able to be around family a lot without breaking quarantine.

Why, in a world of books about the chosen ones, did you decide to make your protagonist Unchosen?

I think we all know what that feels like… to feel overlooked. To almost be the one who gets picked, but not quite. To watch the light shine on others and wonder if it will ever happen for us. I wanted to see a character dealing with that.

Who was your favorite character to write about and why?

Harlow. I feel like I know her really, really well, since I’m the oldest, too.

Tell us something about the first story you ever wrote.

When I was twelve, I found the parts to my dad’s old Windows desktop in the garage and created a levy system to lift them up to the loft part of the garage. I put the computer back together (as in I plugged things in, I wasn’t like… Henry Cavill-ing a workstation when I was a preteen) and made a safe little writing spot where I could be alone. (In a small house with six people, that was my only option, really). I wrote terrible, and I mean… awful vampire stories. So many of them. But they started my love for writing, so I love them. Even though they are hidden away never to see the light of day, ever. ☺

Which scene/part of Unchosen you had the toughest time writing ?

The scenes with Maddox. Every scene with Maddox. She vexed me quite a lot.

If Unchosen was to be made into a show/movie, which song do you think would be the perfect theme?

There’s a creepy cover of “Wayfaring Stranger” by Libera… I think it would make a cool title sequence. ☺

What do you do when you have a writer’s block?

I take a break. Usually a nap – I call them “creative cocoons,” which is basically a name I give naps to make myself believe that I’ll wake up with answers. Fifty percent of the time it works! ☺

Lastly, any tips for aspiring authors?

Write what you love, and read everything.

Katharyn Blair crafts a fiercely feminist fantasy with a horrifying curse, swoon-worthy sea captains, and the power of one girl to choose her own fate in this contemporary standalone adventure that’s perfect for fans of The Fifth Wave and Seafire, and for anyone who has ever felt unchosen.

For Charlotte Holloway, the world ended twice.

The first was when her childhood crush, Dean, fell in love—with her older sister.

The second was when the Crimson, a curse spread through eye contact, turned the majority of humanity into flesh-eating monsters.

Neither end of the world changed Charlotte. She’s still in the shadows of her siblings. Her popular older sister, Harlow, now commands forces of survivors. And her talented younger sister, Vanessa, is the Chosen One—who, legend has it, can end the curse.

When their settlement is raided by those seeking the Chosen One, Charlotte makes a reckless decision to save Vanessa: she takes her place as prisoner.

The word spreads across the seven seas—the Chosen One has been found.

But when Dean’s life is threatened and a resistance looms on the horizon, the lie keeping Charlotte alive begins to unravel. She’ll have to break free, forge new bonds, and choose her own destiny if she has any hope of saving her sisters, her love, and maybe even the world.

Because sometimes the end is just a new beginning.

About the Author

I live in LA, drink way too much coffee, and write all day long — because I’m crazy blessed to do what I’ve been doing for fun since I was a kid hiding in my garage loft writing terrible, terrible vampire stories. Glitter enthusiast. Bethyl shipper. Pluviophile. Ask me about my Dean Winchester obsession. John 1:5.
I’m wife to Ross and mom to Aryn, Liam, and River Grace. Also, mom to Cricket (a dog, not an insect), Maximus Dogimus Meridius (a ferocious cuddlebug) Maggie Rhee (cat, not the bad ass from The Walking Dead), and Kovacs (no parenthetical needed for him
